For me, this dress ended up mostly becoming a very happy surprise! I love long, flowy maxi dresses, but when this showed up in my Vine queue, I wasn’t completely convinced I would like it in person. Many of its details didn’t translate as well in the photos online, compared to how impactful they were in person. This is why I try to have an open mind about what I see online. Oftentimes either photos don’t capture the most interesting aspects of a piece, or at the same token, they gloss over a genuinely terrible design.
Needless to say, this dress exceeded my expectations. It’s not perfect- but aesthetically, it’s a beautiful dress with some unexpected and well placed elements. I selected the blue floral print, which I ordered in a large. Generally, my dress size toggles between a 10 or a 12, so a large is usually a safe bet for me. However, I wish I had ordered a medium instead. This dress is very generously sized. While it is supposed to be loose fitting, I would prefer it if the bodice had a closer fit. Especially with the elastic shirring that encompasses the entire top of the dress. As it is, the smocking adds to the dress’s style, but with it being cut as large as it is, it doesn’t give the dress much shape or create any definition when it’s worn.
The fabric this is made with has some weight to it while still feeling fairly light. It would definitely be too thick to wear during summertime, but it is perfect for transitional weather. The neckline is ruffled all around, until reaching the middle in front, it then turns into a V neck. It is not a deep V whatsoever- it would have benefited from being cut a bit lower- if only to make it simpler to pull over the head when putting the dress on. There are long strings next to where the ruffle ends on both sides of the neck, which can be tied to tighten and close the V neck, or just left alone to keep it open. The waistband is raised and sits at the rib cage, where the maxi skirt is attached. The skirt’s fabric is drawn together at the waistband, and flows with ease all the way down to the bottom tier. It features pockets on each side.
My favorite part about this dress by far is the ric-rack detailing. It sets this style apart from other dresses. Despite being an embellishment that is currently very trendy, it’s not something I see often on many other clothing pieces. It is used in a way that beautifully defines the various design elements that have been incorporated and added to this dress. There are two strips of ric-rack that run the length of both sleeves, and it also circles the edges entirely on the bottom of the sleeves, right above where the bottom tier is attached to the skirt, as well as around the bottom of the dress. The flowers that make up the pattern, along with the ric-rack, are yellow, which compliments and pops against the blue background of the dress.
In terms of its construction, unfortunately, it appears as though it was rushed through production. The pattern doesn’t match at any of the seams, plus many of the stitches are uneven, inconsistent, and somewhat messy in various places. It’s not something that is necessarily obvious when the dress is on- until taking a look at the underside. Even so, this is still a beautiful dress that I am very happy to have. If I could change anything, besides improving the quality, I wish I would have gotten a smaller size. As far as value is concerned, it offers quite a bit when it comes to its appearance, in addition to its most thoughtful design aspects, but the quality and assembly should be better. Taking that into account, I would have a difficult time justifying it at full price.
